NAVIGATING THE NEWS

Peter Altabef
Welcome to 2018’s first edition of Focus on U. In my 2018 kickoff message, I talked about my hope for a more engaged dialogue among us this year. I will be an active participant in this effort, communicating with you via email whenever I have something I think worth communicating, but probably monthly. As you saw last week, Inder Singh has taken over the quarterly earnings email communications.

Focus on U continues to mature in its third year. I think the articles continue to be more and more compelling, and a great window into what the company is doing.

Ann Ruckstuhl’s piece on our new brand platform is very important, and I hope everyone pays special attention to it. There are links to our vision and mission statements, and the immediacy of those statements (they are not just aspirational) is powerful.

PV’s piece on our U.S. Federal business should answer any questions as to why our Federal business has been growing for the past few years!

The awards and new client wins highlighted in the article are all important, but I would single out our European Central Bank win for you to think through a few times. We went up against the biggest players in our space, on one of the highest profile clients in the world, and came out on top. Good stuff.

Finally, we are spotlighting some of our great associates, who also turn out to be very interesting people, inside and outside of the workplace, including cooks (Norm Owens), artists (Joy Fernandez) and triathletes (Frederico Moura).

I hope you enjoy this issue of Focus on U.

Leveraging Our New Brand Platform with Pride
By Ann Sung Ruckstuhl

We are starting 2018 in an exciting way. As I sit here after the Enterprise Solutions Go-to-Market Kickoff – and in advance of our analyst event, I wanted to give you some insight on all the things 2018 has brought us so far – and what we have to look forward to in the coming months.

On January 9, Peter and I officially launched the re-energization of our brand. (Read the message in its entirety here.) From the use of lifestyle-based photography … to the vibrant color palette … to invigorated PowerPoint templates, the Brand Center houses all the latest materials.

And then last week, Peter unveiled our Vision, Mission and Value Propositions with this video. He provided context on how they shape us as a company and what makes us Unisys.

As a builder of innovative, superbly crafted solutions for the most demanding businesses and governments on Earth, our clients count on us to help bring them closer than ever to the people they serve, without compromising trust or interrupting the flow of everyday life. The mission, vision, value propositions and core beliefs encapsulated in the new brand platform are intended to clearly and concisely convey the purpose, direction and driving forces of Unisys – the "who, what and why" – as we serve our clients.

Our brand strategy is our ultimate reason for being. Every company can make a promise through its brand strategy. But in today’s world, where trust is a necessity, it’s not just about making a promise that you think you can keep. It’s also about making a promise that separates one brand from another. It’s having a defining purpose and vision – and we now have that. Our brand promise is reflected in our industry-leading Net Promoter Score and the client success stories on how they’ve successfully transformed their businesses with Unisys technology and services. In the coming weeks, you will see additional videos, from Eric Hutto and me, on additional aspects of the brand platform. You’ll also start to see a re-energized look in our offices. Be sure to be on the lookout!

We hope your sense of pride in working as part of an organization that stands for something meaningful, in our case Building Better Outcomes – Securely, grows as you gain more understanding of who we are and what we do.

Lessons from the 2018 Federal Kickoff
By Venkatapathi Puvadda (PV)

On January 3 and 4, Unisys Federal held our 2018 kickoff session. Convening in a single room, senior leaders, client executives, sales executives and program managers applied collective brainpower, planning skill and strategic creativity to the steps that will accelerate business momentum this year.  The team’s positive outlook, collaboration and camaraderie energized the room and impressed me immensely.

Following are session highlights:
  • Each business operations group presented its top three needs for every account/client set, with modernization, cloud and security/Stealth™ the three areas of common focus.
  • The teams learned about our differentiated solutions capabilities such as LeanGov, Agile At Scale, CloudForte™, Workplace As A Service, Software Defined Infrastructure, Biometrics and IoT.
  • Sales Vice President Sean Thompson presented compelling data on the results of revamps to the Federal pipeline, yielding the following 2018 objectives:
    • Win 1 in 3 deals overall, and 1 in 10 new logo deals.
    • Capitalize on the in-year awardable revenue in the existing pipeline.
    • Execute on our capture plans to leverage the investments we are making to proactively position us for strategic deals in the pipeline over the next 12-18 months.
    • Focus resources on the highest win-rate deals with relationships, great pricing and margins, referenceable past performance and other key success factors.
  • Melissa Carson, our Vice President of Operations, detailed several resources available for delivery and growth, such as concierge that teams can use for efficient service delivery, best practices for recruiting and building bench strength.
  • Each operating group (Homeland and Critical Infrastructure, Defense and Intelligence and Civilian Agencies) established priority pipeline playbooks and 2018 resource focus for optimal growth, delivery and people development.
In closing the session, I issued the following 5-point call-to-action:
  1. Sustain exceptional client satisfaction levels with white-glove service because our “world class” Net Promoter Score (NPS) differentiates us, while leveraging the proven capabilities of the entire company.
  2. Execute with discipline against our 2018 playbooks to protect and grow our business base.
  3. Work diligently to enhance our differentiation, including software-defined capabilities and notable delivery metrics.
  4. Remain people-focused to create a “best place to work” environment while maintaining our engineering culture, enhancing associate communication, taking time for recognition, encouraging certification/training and sharing our people’s great promotion/career development stories.
  5. Achieve a cultural transformation by living the value that “attitude wins over ability” and maintaining a business ownership mentality focused on high-performance and a culture of high expectations.
The team’s excellent, focused work has set a foundation for Federal as 2018 takes hold. I look forward with great anticipation to working with this team and each of you to achieve our goals!

Our Company Around the World
Walking and Running for Social Inclusion in Brazil
Unisys recently sponsored the Olga Kos Street Race. Founded in 2007, the Olga Kos Institute for Cultural Inclusion (IOK) is a non-profit association that develops artistic and sports projects to give priority to children, young people and adults with intellectual disabilities. In addition to the opportunity to increase brand awareness in Brazil – the race included more than 18,000 participants – a few dozen of our associates participated in the run as well.
Singapore Associates End the Year by Giving Back
On the last Saturday of 2017, our Singapore associates volunteered in a soup kitchen with local charity Willing Hands. The charity operates a soup kitchen that prepares, cooks and distributes to the elderly, the disabled, low income families and children from single parents about 5,000 daily meals to over 40 locations island wide, 365 days a year. Our associates prepared the ingredients to be cooked, packed the lunch bags, cleaned and organized cooking utensils and helped deliver food.
Malvern Associates Engineer a Volunteer Project
Engineers from our office in Malvern, Pa. (USA) partnered with the Delaware Valley Children’s Charity to sponsor underprivileged children for Christmas. Each child comes from a needy family; the only gifts they will receive from “Santa” come from sponsors of the charity. The charity provides a list of special needs and requests for each child, and our associates sponsored 21 children. We gathered donations from the generous engineering team and went shopping. We bought warm clothes and plenty of toys from “Santa.” We wrapped and bagged the gifts for each child, and placed them in the Malvern main lobby for pick-up by the charity volunteers. These gifts were delivered to the families close to Christmas.
Swimming Toward a Cure
Pam Martin from our EMEA Services team took on the challenge of swimming the equivalent of the English Channel for the ASPIRE charity, which provides support to people with spinal injuries. She completed 22 miles in just over four weeks with daily sessions – that’s 1,416 lengths of her local swimming pool. The hardest part was keeping count of the number of lengths that she swam during each session! Thanks to everyone’s fantastic generosity, she raised more than £1200 ($1,600), which will fund the provision of rise and fall sinks and hobs in accessible houses, for example enabling someone with a spinal cord injury in a wheelchair to become more independent. Out of more than 6,000 swimmers in the UK who took part, Pam was in the top 20 of individual fund-raisers.
